NOT BEING FORCED TO CHANGE<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;ve found is that when I approach any technique<br \/>\nlike this with the attitude that there&#8217;s something<br \/>\nwrong with me, and I need to change, I meet the part of<br \/>\nmyself that stubbornly resists.<\/p>\n<p>And I get no results except frustration.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the setup statement, the part where I<br \/>\naccept myself just as I am, with all my imperfections<br \/>\nand problems and resistance and refusal to let go of<br \/>\nthe attitudes and beliefs that don&#8217;t serve me, is so<br \/>\nimportant.<\/p>\n<p>That neutral, you-don&#8217;t-have-to-change or prove<br \/>\nanything acceptance is the key to being able to let go<br \/>\nof those stubborn beliefs. <\/p>\n<p>You probably know the beliefs I&#8217;m talking about.<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;I&#8217;m not worthy or good enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;I don&#8217;t have enough ______.&#8221;(fill in the blank.)<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;I&#8217;m damaged or lacking beyond repair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;I can never be forgiven.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;I can never forgive or let go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;No one values me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;I should be further along than I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d let go of beliefs like those if you could,<br \/>\nwouldn&#8217;t you? &#8230; Or would you?<\/p>\n<p>2. GETTING CURIOUS<\/p>\n<p>The second thing I want to share with you is the value<br \/>\nof curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>When I approach my most stubborn problems with the<br \/>\nfeeling of desperately wanting to change them, or<br \/>\ndespair about anything ever working for me, what helps<br \/>\nis getting curious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wonder what I can learn about this that I never knew<br \/>\nbefore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This changes the focus from needing to change something<br \/>\nto just discovering something.<\/p>\n<p>The same curiosity helps when I find myself resisting a<br \/>\nteacher or someone else. <\/p>\n<p>Instead of getting into judging the other person, then<br \/>\njudging myself for judging the person, and getting<br \/>\nentrenched in my opinions, I take a step back and get<br \/>\nlovingly curious about this person who is so caught up<br \/>\nin judging and resisting.<\/p>\n<p>3.
