My<br \/>\ntopic, \u201cFive Simple Things You Can Do to Protect Your<br \/>\nHeart and Brain,\u201d seems pretty straightforward. But I\u2019m<br \/>\nguessing people\u2019s receptivity to my thoughts will<br \/>\ndepend on their agenda&#8211;conscious or not.<\/p>\n<p>What would yours be?<\/p>\n<p>Would you be there with open curiosity and willingness<br \/>\nto do all you can to care for yourself so that you can<br \/>\nhave confidence in your body and mind as you age?<\/p>\n<p>Would you be there with suspicion, ready to challenge<br \/>\nanything that doesn\u2019t agree with your already<br \/>\nestablished ideas about your health, or to challenge me<br \/>\nbecause I\u2019m not an authority you\u2019ve chosen to trust?<\/p>\n<p>Would you be there with resistance, part of you hoping<br \/>\nfor something easy to do, and part of you certain that<br \/>\nI\u2019ll tell you to do something you won\u2019t want to, or<br \/>\ncan\u2019t do?<\/p>\n<p>Would you be there with a hundred questions,<br \/>\nunconsciously engaging in a habit of using all your<br \/>\nenergy to stay in doubt, uncertainty, confusion, and<br \/>\nindecision rather than picking a direction and moving<br \/>\nforward?<\/p>\n<p>If your thought was that you wouldn\u2019t be there at all,<br \/>\nwhy?<\/p>\n<p>Having read this far, you\u2019ve perhaps engaged your<br \/>\nthinking. Pause for a moment and notice how you feel.<\/p>\n<p>   &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Now, I invite you to step back and think of someone who<br \/>\nloves you, however imperfectly. Or, to think of someone<br \/>\nor something you love, even if not perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>When you are in a space of love, you can be receptive<br \/>\nto ideas\u2014your own wisdom and inspiration, and useful<br \/>\nideas of others. In a space of love, you\u2019ll be able to<br \/>\nfeel what is right for you, without needing to fight<br \/>\nagainst what isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>When you read or listen to \u201cThe Science of Being Well,\u201d<br \/>\nyou may find yourself engaging your thinking mind, and<br \/>\nagreeing or disagreeing with Mr. Wattles. Notice how<br \/>\nyou feel if you approach the book from this<br \/>\nperspective.<\/p>\n<p>But notice what happens when you step back and just<br \/>\nfeel the love of this man who witnessed healing and<br \/>\nwanted so much to help others, however imperfect his<br \/>\nexplanations. <\/p>\n<p>Notice what happens if you let yourself feel my love<br \/>\nfor you, however imperfectly I may express it, and even<br \/>\nif we may have never met. <\/p>\n<p>And notice what happens, if you believe in God, or<br \/>\nbelieve in some other loving non-physical power, and<br \/>\nyou let yourself feel love pouring into and all around<br \/>\nyou?<\/p>\n<p>When you are in the space of love, what happens to the<br \/>\nimportance of micro-managing your thoughts, what and<br \/>\nhow you eat, whether or not you sleep with your windows<br \/>\nopen, how far you walked yesterday?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that the details don\u2019t matter. They are<br \/>\nwonderful tools for demonstrating your own caring for<br \/>\nyourself. But when you find yourself in your head,<br \/>\nfeeling anything but joyfully curious, try widening<br \/>\nback into your heart. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m preparing a little talk at my local library for \u201cHealth Week,\u201d an event targeted for baby boomers.
