Last night I was at a community potluck. Three people
reported having just recovered from the flu, one from
pneumonia, and another from a bad fall. Yikes!
In the past two weeks, I’ve learned of two other friends
who’ve been diagnosed with advanced cancer. 🙁
All of these events happened at very inconvenient times,
completely disrupting the person’s life. Each person would
have argued that they didn’t “plan” to get sick.
Yet, all of them ignored signs that trouble was on the way,
because it wasn’t “convenient” to handle them at the time.
Do you do this too? Do you put yourself last? Do you
continue to push yourself when you feel stressed, assuming
that “stress is just part of life?” Do you assume there is
nothing you can do about your unhappiness, low self esteem,
feelings of being trapped in your life circumstances? Do
numb out, or cover up your stress and pain with food,
alcohol, work, shopping, drugs?
But stress is the underlying cause of all illness, and even
all accidents.
And you CAN do something about it!
Lots of people think they “can’t afford” to pause and learn
how to do things differently, because financial stress is
what’s causing them to push themselves until they get sick,
and financial stress leads to time stress, so they feel like
they don’t have time to do anything differently.
Please, take a deep breath.
Sooner or later, the vicious cycle WILL be interrupted. It
will either be by your conscious choice, deciding to get a
handle on your life, deciding you ARE worth a better life,
or it will be by default, in the form of illness or an
accident.
Illness and accidents are, to say the least, VERY
INCONVENIENT!
And often, they are VERY EXPENSIVE in both money and time,
not to mention suffering. It’s not exactly the vacation of
your dreams to spend a week in bed, too sick to even read a
good book, enjoy a movie, or be with those you love.
And, remember the story of the frog who didn’t jump out of
the water because he didn’t notice it was getting gradually
hotter and hotter, until he was cooked?
If you’ve been limping along for years, “managing” to get by
with the assistance of stopgap measures, you may be missing
the clues that the water is getting hotter–that things are
happening in your body that you may not be willing to
notice.
Give yourself the gift this holiday season of the true
comfort and happiness of awakening and becoming empowered by
consciously choosing a vibrant life, rather than letting the
default of illness and injury just “happen” to you.

Dr. Alexandra Gayek
I learned a couple decades ago, that when I feel even a “tinge” of illness or just exhaustion, I STOP and take a 15 minute break. I have learned how to completely relax during that time, before going back to whatever I was doing. I can do it in the bathroom if I need to.
When I do that I actually SAVE TIME. I am nourishing my body and it does Not get sick!! I am taking a short break to avoid taking a few days off because I am sick with a cold, flu, or whatever. I am rarely ever, ever ill with even a headache or stomach ache.
I have the challenge of my weight, however, illness rarely ever or normal aches and pains, rarely ever, ever come to visit me because I STOP and listen to my body’s needs when I feel stressed, tired, overwhelmed, or like something is coming… a cold or whatever.
Great advice Alexandra! I am living proof! Now I need to pay attention more perhaps to other signals regarding other things in my body.
